Mercedes-Benz of Clear Lake welcomes you to learn what the symptoms of a faulty gas cap are.
The 1st symptom of faulty gas caps is a gas cap that will not completely tighten or a loose gas cap. This might not seem significant right away, but if you don’t have an air-tight seal then the fuel system can be contaminated with dirt and grime. If the gas cap isn’t sealing properly, try checking the rubber seal to be sure it isn’t missing or brittle. If you drive an old car, be sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both can cause gas cap problems and might even require purchasing a replacement from the manufacturer.
What concerns can an ill-fitting gas cap cause? How about a check engine light just for starters? An ill-fitting gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can also allow fuel vapors to escape the gas tank. These fuel vapors can trigger errors in the emissions system, which could light up the check engine light. Dirt that gets into the fuel tank may also contaminate fuel injectors. Perhaps the most common sign of a bad gas cap is the gasoline smell inside your car.
These days you could possibly see no gas cap on new cars, but if your car was not made with a capless gas tank, you shouldn’t drive without a gas cap installed. If your car or truck is older, there’s a possibility that fuel could slosh out from the gas tank during aggressive corners or other enthusiastic driving. Driving your vehicle without a gas cap can lead to diminished fuel economy because the gasoline might evaporate without a fully-sealed tank. The gas smell is the gas evaporating from the tank, which can cause diminished fuel efficiency.
If you’ve already inspected the gas cap, the problems you are having may be due to contaminated fuel. If the car, truck, or SUV has trouble starting, will not accelerate, or just isn’t running right, then you might just have bad gas.
