What is a remote keyless entry system?
Remote passive entry systems on a vehicle, sometimes known as keyless entry systems, come with more than a few key advantages. The most popular perk of keyless entry is the convenience it affords. Got your hands full? You can still open the hatch with a wave of your foot, depending on your car. Just press the button and go, no more fighting to get the key into the lock. Another big benefit of keyless entry is the increased security it offers. The key has electronics inside that need to be validated by your vehicle before it will start the engine or even open any doors. Some keyless entry systems will even automatically lock your doors as you walk away. Last but not least, there is the fun perk of keyless entry, remote ignition. You’ll feel like an everyday wizard when you press a button on your remote and hear your car start.
All Passive systems are keyless, but not all Keyless Entry Systems are passive. Confused yet? This is how it functions. Keyless Entry requires the car driver to use buttons on the key to lock and unlock the car doors and other functions like opening the trunk. Passive Keyless is when you can keep your keys in your pocket and you touch an area (like a spot on a door) to unlock and lock the doors, or shake your foot to open the hatch area. One perk of passive entry systems is that they generally include Keyless Ignition. Keyless Ignition lets drivers start and drive their vehicle without the keys ever leaving their purse.
Even though they do similar things, Keyless Ignition and Remote Start are not the same. Keyless Ignition lets you start and drive your car without using a regular key. Remote Start lets drivers start their car via their key fob. Remote Start can be helpful during extreme temperatures such as very hot or very cold days by letting you start the car and turn on the heat or AC. You will never get into a cold car again, just use the Remote Ignition and warm it up before you drive away.
A Smart Key is an electronic way (fob, smartphone app, key card) that is used to remotely access a vehicle. The buttons for your wireless functions are located on the Smart Key itself. The Smart Key transmits signals to the car to open the trunk, lock the doors, and so on. Some Smart Keys are even connected to the anti-theft system and won’t let the car start without them. With so many fun and convenient options available on Smart Keys, why would you pick anything else?
